The Return of a Design Icon - Artilleriet Resumes Production of Etcetera

Etcetera was designed in 1970 by Jan Ekselius and has since then become an icon for the design expression of the 70s.

Etcetera is still today a sought after design object and the series is regularly represented among the world's premier auction houses. In an exclusive collaboration between Swedish design boutique Artilleriet and the designer Jan Ekselius, Artilleriet will resume the original production of the Etcetera series. The easy chair and its characteristic organic form is part of the Swedish design heritage and brings a higher level of design to any space.

–We are extremely happy to collaborate with Jan Ekselius and bring a design icon as Etcetera into the future and we aim to relaunch the Etcetera series to the world. The easy chair has attained an iconic status especially in France and the States but has for years only been available on the second hand market. As with all sustainable and lasting design Etcetera feels as relevant today as when it was designed almost 50 years ago, its form and comfort is on a level of its own.

The knowledge and experience of the original production has been brought into the development of the new Etcetera. To achieve the highest level of quality and a sustainable product the assembling is completed together with craftsmen experienced from the original manufacturing at J.O. Carlsson and Forsbergs in Småland, Sweden. The manufacturing of Etcetera testifies of a genuine craftsmanship by seasoned professionals and their love for the furniture.

– It all began when I was attending the Royal College of Art in London and discovered how elegantly and naturally elastic materials formed when stretched over a convex shape. I made a prototype in the school's workshop of bent steel pipes and latex dipped jute fabric, the prototype ended up as one of my degree projects. When production started in 1972 at the J.O. Carlsson, we realised that the elastic fabric was difficult to use an I started to search for a replacing material. I eventually found a solution when Volvo invented their adjustable Pullmaflex back support. Now the concept and comfort have been even further developed with the help of elastic bands, says Jan Ekselius.

– I am very glad to collaborate with Artilleriet, they have an approach to design that very much correspond with my own and I really do look forward to the relaunch. 50 years ago I could never have had imagined that Etcetera would be this desired today, Jan Ekselius concludes.

Andre Kikoski Architect Designs $45 Million Oceanfront Home for Hampton’s Premiere Developer Jay Bialsky

Andre Kikoski, renowned for his work at the Guggenheim Museum, announced his newest project, a contemporary oceanfront home for Hamptons real estate magnate Jay Bialsky.

Bialsky has built some of the most exceptional homes seen on Long Island’s East End for some of the Hamptons’ most discerning clientele. He turned to AIA Institute Honor Award-winning architect Kikoski for a residence that celebrates the stunning natural landscape, storied beauty, and expansive ocean views that are the best of the Hamptons.

"We wanted to create harmony among house, land and sea, something that took advantage of this unique oceanfront positioning, a contemporary design where you can almost feel the sand beneath your feet from any spot in the house," said Kikoski. "We’ve worked on NYC trophy penthouses where it was all about the views, but this home really takes the cake."

With an outstanding oceanfront location and deeded ocean access to a private section of Bridgehampton’s sought after beaches, this state-of-the-art home takes the indoor/outdoor living concept to the next level, with 10,000SF +/- of interior space complemented by over 12,000SF +/- of exterior space. The expansive exterior space features multiple outdoor living areas including a covered kitchen and dining area, rooftop deck with landscaping/garden, numerous outdoor lounges, custom infinity-edge pool, fire pit and outdoor shower.

The combined 22,000 SF+/- of interior and exterior living space is afforded by the properties large and optimal building envelope being set in an AE Zone, which is rarely found in oceanfront properties. The superb location is captured by entire walls of glass that provide sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean from nearly every room in the house, while sunset vistas over stunning Mecox Bay can be enjoyed from the rooftop deck.

With a keen eye for any parcel's maximum potential, Bialsky is responsible for some of the most magnificent homes and developments on the East End, many of which have unparalleled views. Bialsky's exacting standards keep his homes in constant demand, "I don't buy any property or build any home I wouldn't want to live in myself," he says.

The property is listed for $44.9M with Zachary and Cody Vichinsky of Bespoke Real Estate. Bespoke is a Hamptons based firm that only represents $10M and above properties . Kikoski is currently working on 75 Kenmare, a 90,000 SF residential development which recently broke ground in Nolita, with DHA Capital and the Kravitz Design Group. He is also the interior architect on the 325,000 SF tower by the Related Companies slated to open this summer at Hudson Yards. And AKA launched a line of home accessories with Swarovski Crystal at Salone de Mobile in Milan, Italy last April.

ABOUT THE DESIGN
The design blends 10,000 square feet of interior living space over two levels with an equal area outside -- spread between three floors of invitingly landscaped decks and terraces. Interior and exterior lie side by side, gently joined together by 60-foot long expanses of automated structural sliding glass panels that disappear into exterior walls. The open-plan living and entertaining spaces, as well as the master suite, enjoy magnificent direct views of the Atlantic Ocean, Mecox Bay and the landscape beyond in every direction from the second level. A triple height glass atrium organizes vertical circulation within the house, filling the interior with the fabled natural light of the Hamptons at every moment of the day. A folded metal plate staircase connects this level to a spectacular rooftop entertaining garden.

Equally bold is the focal point of the first level – an expansive outdoor deck, poised above the grassy dunes and offering direct ocean views from the trellised open-air dining pavilion, bar and kitchen, as well as a fire pit with seating area and multiple landscaped lounging areas. The spectacular oceanfront infinity edge pool and spa, unique in being just steps from the beach, is however the centerpiece and star. These dramatic exterior spaces flow into informal indoor entertaining rooms, including a generous family room and high tech home theatre which also feature automated structural sliding glass wall panels. Six additional bedrooms, a home office, wine cellar, sauna, and six car garage round out the program. The residence is set amidst one and a half expertly landscaped acres with ample manicured lawns designed by award-winning landscape architect Edmund Hollander.

In addition to elegantly composed glass facades, with playfully proportioned window patterns, the exterior of the house is clad in simple honest materials such as cerused stucco and a randomly staggered horizontal screen of three different sizes of Brazilian Ipe wood components. The screen is inspired by Kikoski’s prior collaboration with artist Liam Gillick for a site-specific installation, and complements the clean lines of the exterior with an inviting dappling of shade and shadow.

Karl Lagerfeld to Design the Lobbies of the Estates at Acqualina

Trump Group Partners with World Renowned Designer on His First Interior Design Project in the United States

The Trump Group, led by Eddie and Jules Trump, announced an exclusive partnership with one of the world’s most important designers, Karl Lagerfeld. Mr. Lagerfeld will design the two residential lobby spaces at The Estates at Acqualina, a brand new, ultra-luxury residential development in Miami’s Sunny Isles Beach, on the grounds of the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond Acqualina Resort & Spa.

The first condominium project in the United States to involve the iconic designer, The Estates at Acqualina – slated to open in 2020 – will feature lobbies designed by Karl Lagerfeld that reflect the designer’s exquisite style and eye for detail, with custom features, finishes and furnishings conceived and designed by Mr. Lagerfeld himself.

“Simply put, The Estates at Acqualina will be the world’s finest residences,” said Jules Trump, developer of The Estates at Acqualina. “Eddie and I wanted our entrance lobbies to be the piece de resistance of our new project, and who better to create these than the master of modern creativity: Karl Lagerfeld. Karl is the world’s most acclaimed designer, and we believe his high-end designs will be greatly valued by our residents, who desire an incomparable level of opulence, luxury, design and style.”

“I am excited by the opportunity to design the lobbies of The Estates at Acqualina and take great pride in knowing that the spaces I create will be such important spaces in the building,” said Karl Lagerfeld. “Not only are they significant because they offer the first impression of the building, they are also the spaces where people come to socialize daily; they are like a common living room. My designs are inspired by the look of each lobby, the building and the destination of Florida especially. The climate is very warm there and I wanted something fresh.”

The partnership with Karl Lagerfeld was arranged by Leitzes & Co.

Following on the heels of the hugely successful sellout of The Mansions at Acqualina which debuted this past fall, The Estates at Acqualina will go even further. No expense will be spared to design and build The Estates, which will be a spectacular celebration of Art, Architecture and Life.

When complete, The Estates at Acqualina will offer 265 luxurious residences from three to seven bedrooms in two, 50-story boutique towers, Via Acqualina 777 and Via Acqualina 888. Each master suite will boast his and her bathroom suites with imported onyx countertops and walls and marble floors, a steam mist shower, a free-standing tub, an ocean-view shower and elaborate his and her dressing rooms.

Rising to the north of The Acqualina Resort & Spa, The Estates will include Villa Acqualina, offering more than 45,000 square feet of amenities including a spa and fitness center, a world-class restaurant overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Circus Maximus, a full floor of unprecedented amenities including an ice skating rink, bowling lanes and a movie theater. It will also boast a Wall Street Trader’s Club room where residents will have access to ticker tape, computers and a board room.

The Estates’ 5.6 acres of grounds and gardens will boast lush landscaped gardens, multiple infinity pools, a FlowRider for surfers, a basketball court, a bocce court, a dog park, soccer field, a beachfront restaurant and 502 feet of Atlantic oceanfront with Five Star beach and pool services. 24-hour valet, 24-hour security services, a full service resident concierge and a house Rolls-Royce will also be available.

Those who purchase at The Estates will have full access to the neighboring Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond Acqualina Resort & Spa, TripAdvisor’s Top-Rated Beachfront Hotel in The Continental United States and Andrew Harper’s #1 Beach, Spa and Family Resort in the World. Residents will be able to take advantage of luxurious, personalized services from the hotel including daily housekeeping, in-room dining, children’s programming, nanny and child care services, pet care, dry cleaning and laundry services, limousine service, ESPA Spa access and gourmet dining at two restaurants, Il Mulino NY and AQ by Acqualina.

The BEACH by Snarkitecture

The BEACH is an interactive architectural installation designed by Snarkitecture for the National Building Museum.

The National Building Museum presents a one-of-a-kind destination for visitors, an interactive architectural installation that brings the quintessential summer experience of going to the beach to downtown Washington, D.C. Spanning across the Museum's Great Hall, the BEACH, created in partnership with Snarkitecture, will cover 10,000 square feet and include an "ocean" of nearly one million recyclable translucent plastic balls.

The BEACH is contained within an enclosure and built out of construction materials such as scaffolding, wooden panels, and perforated mesh, all clad in stark white. Monochromatic beach chairs and umbrellas sprinkle the 50-foot wide "shoreline," and the "ocean" culminates in a mirrored wall that creates a seemingly infinite reflected expanse. Visitors are welcome to "swim" in the ocean, or can spend an afternoon at the "shore's" edge reading a good book, play beach-related activities such as paddleball, grab a refreshing drink at the snack bar, or dangle their feet in the ocean off the pier.

Enjoy our snack concession, operated through a partnership with Union Kitchen, a D.C.-based food incubator.

PROJECT:
Taking cues from the familiar experience of a summer day at the beach, Snarkitecture has abstracted both the natural and cultural elements of the beach to create a reduced, monochromatic environment inside the museum's Great Hall. Standard construction materials like scaffolding, drywall, and mirrors are utilized to create the enclosure that leads to an ocean of 750,000 recyclable plastic balls.

The Beach welcomes visitors to explore, play and relax in a fully immersive and unique setting.

About Snarkitecture
Snarkitecture is a collaborative and experimental practice operating in territories between art and architecture. The name is drawn from Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of The Snark, a poem describing an "impossible voyage of an improbable crew to find an inconceivable creature."

Snarkitecture investigates the unknown within architecture - the indefinable moments created by manipulating and reinterpreting existing materials, structures and programs to spectacular effect.

Exploring the boundaries of disciplines, the studio designs permanent, architectural scale projects and functional objects with new and imaginative purposes. Snarkitecture's approach focuses on the viewer's experience and memory, creating moments of wonder and interaction that allow people to engage directly with their surrounding environment. By transforming the familiar into the extraordinary, Snarkitecture makes architecture perform the unexpected.

Snarkitecture was established by Alex Mustonen and Daniel Arsham.
